I was perusing the Anthropologie site a couple months ago (I spend a lot of time perusing that site) when I happened upon a super cute ring dish. You probably already know about my love affair with jewelry storage- somehow I just cannot seem to get enough cute little trays and dishes and… well, let’s just forget about the fact that I don’t actually WEAR much jewelry and the jewelry I DO wear I don’t take off very often. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN I WILL START. STOP JUDGING ME.
The ring dish I saw then (this one right here) was just too cute for words, but what really got me was the pretty floral design. I loved it! And I knew that I could recreate it and come up with my own Anthropologie-style version, easy peasy.
The idea for this technique came from these super cute DIY ornaments from the Tattly blog. I even used some of the same Tattly tattoos featured! I’ve been a Tattly fan since the very beginning so I might be a little biased, but they really do have some of the cutest designs ever. If floral isn’t quite right for you, there’s plenty to choose from on their site. (Can you say FERRIS WHEEL?!)
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Temporary Tattoos in your selected design
- A sponge (Tattly tattoos come with their own)
- A small dish (ceramic, similar to https://www.amzn.to/2aBAZFfthese on Amazon that come in a 12 pack)
Now, the procedure SEEMS like it should be fairly simple: apply the tattoo to the dish just as if you were applying it to your skin. But after failing on my first attempt I want to share a few tips:
If there is excess background around the tattoo, do your best to trim it off. The larger the tattoo backing the tougher it can be to peel it off.
Get the tattoo wetter than damp. It needs the water to release from the paper backing and adhere to the dish. Then, make you press down REALLY well, but don’t let the paper backing move around- this will smear your tattoo.
Peel the backing off carefully! You may have pieces that want to come up with the paper backing. If this happens to you, move slowly and try to use your finger to press the wet tattoo onto the dish.
Once you’ve peeled it off, let it dry well. You can apply a quick spray of clear gloss to seal, but I haven’t felt the need to yet- I’ve even used nail polish removed to remove one design and try another!
