Simple Vietnamese Coffee

April 17, 2019 by Carla

This post has been sponsored by Eagle Brand®.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If there’s one thing I’ll DEFINITELY explore when I travel, it’s the local drinks of choice.  On our first trip to Vietnam we tried Egg Coffee and Iced Vietnamese Coffee and boba and it was, of course, delicious.

But there’s one coffee that stands out, that’s SO simple and accessible: Vietnamese Coffee.   I’m just going to say it- it’s one of life’s easiest, tastiest, magnificent treats.  So what’s stopped me from drinking it more often?  When Eagle Brand reached out about working together to create a sponsored post with their new squeezable bottle, it was just the motivation I needed to find out.

Growing up, we used Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk constantly for all sorts of things: to top toast or make arroz con leche or dulce de leche.  We ALWAYS used Eagle Brand, it was the one my mom trusted and the only one I grab off the shelf when making my own desserts now.  (Can we just put sweetened condensed milk in everything?  I vote yes.)

Here’s the thing: opening a can of condensed milk is kind of a commitment.  My mom is super wary of ingredients spilling in the refrigerator- in fairness she had four kids who probably didn’t want to clean up very sticky, drippy messes.  And condensed milk is one of those ingredients- not necessarily easy to reseal or store, making it tough to use only a tablespoon at a time.

Which means I can confidently say this bottle of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk in a SQUEEZE BOTTLE is perhaps my most favorite recent invention.  (Cue a soaring singing choir, RIGHT?)

Get this: you open the lid, you squeeze some out, YOU PUT IT IN THE REFRIGERATOR.  No mess!  SO EASY!  It’s the same great taste as the can, but… easier?

I’ve had Vietnamese Coffee in two ways, both in Vietnam:

The first way: essentially, I was given a coffee cup with a layer of sweetened condensed milk at the bottom.  On top was a tin drip filter (basically a simple pour over style) with a nice pour of very strong coffee.  You let the coffee drip into the mug, then you’d remove the filter and stir it up.  You could add more sweetened condensed milk to taste- or add ice for the cold version.

The second way: strong pours of drip coffee right into a mug, add ALL THE SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK you want from a little jug.

Both ways are super tasty, but I wanted to show you the second way since you can make happen the minute you get your hands on this Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk!

Ok, first things first: make yourself some STRONG coffee.  Pour 6-8ish ounces of it into your mug.  (Obviously, you pour as much as you like.  The great thing about this second version is the flexibility from that squeeze top.)

Now, add your Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed milk and stir it up!  (I would suggest 1-2 tablespoons for 6 to 8 ounces of coffee- I take two myself.)

The result:

  • BEST coffee morning (or afternoon… or evening) treat
  • A clean refrigerator
  • More Vietnamese Coffee later

YUM.  Please tell me what else I’m forgetting I can make EVERY DAY now that I’ve got this squeeze bottle- we’ll learn together.  🙂
