When Alyssa got married last year, I was lucky enough to help plan a super-fun (I hope!) bachelorette party. We had a spectacular dinner before a sleepover at a San Francisco hotel right near Union Square, complete with plenty of candy and snacks and champagne cocktails.
Even though we took a few weeks to plan, narrowing down the details left us with a pretty short window of time to acquire supplies. Since I didn’t want to decorate with just any old boring party store items, I thought I’d figure out a way to make a simple flag banner to decorate the hotel room. Not only was it an easy project, but using purple felt and yarn (Alyssa’s favorite color!) meant we just HAPPENED to coordinate perfectly with the hotel room decor!
Items needed:
skein of yarn in your preferred color
sheets of felt (9″x12″)
a yarn needle (not pictured, but similar to this
Optional:
pressboard pennant (I used this as a pattern to get the most possible flags from each sheet, my set provided 3 pennants, sized 6″x9″)
glitter pens
- Using the pressboard pennant as a guide, cut out flag shapes from the cloth. I used about 10 sheets to create 30 flags (3 per sheet), which provided enough flags for about 40 feet. Your needs will vary based on spacing, but it’s easy enough to cut out more!
- Thread your yarn through your needle. Insert your needle into the upper right corner of the flag, from front to back.
Let the yarn run across the back of the flag and pull your needle through the upper left corner of flag, back to front. Continue the pattern until you’ve strung all the flags onto the yarn and hang it up!- Depending on your venue, push pins work best for hanging. Another good option would be to make sure you leave enough of a yarn tail at either end so that you can simply tie it on! Tape will work ok since the flags aren’t very heavy, but the fibers from both the yarn and the felt tend to be attracted to the tape adhesive and might make it less sticky.
