DIY Watercolor Cards

November 1, 2014 by Carla

Have you heard of DarbySmart?  I’m betting if you’re a crafter, you’ve heard something about this fun little company.  The site devotes itself to creating craft kits (and selling supplies) that make it uber simple for you to create some of the best projects around.  When I heard that our friend Laura (artist extraordinaire) had created her very own kit which allows you to make beautiful watercolor cards, I had to check it out.

The kit gets sent to you in the mail in an eye-catching box- just open it up for an extra special presentation:

The enclosed card comes with a custom url for your project.  All you need to do is sign on for simple instructions!

This particular kit is extra fantastic because the finished product is so versatile.  The examples that Laura created for her kit are practically mini paintings using several colors.  But it was just as easy to use the enclosed supplies to create this one-color Thank You card design.  Another perk?  Watercolor is super forgiving, goes a long way and tends to look pretty no matter what you do.

A few tips for this particular kit:

* The liquid frisket is a great tool!  Be aware that you shouldn’t use your favorite paintbrush to apply since it isn’t easily cleaned once dry.  Also: make sure that the frisket is SUPER dry before you go to peel it off to avoid leaving tiny remnants behind.

* No need to start with a big glob of paint- a little really goes a long way!

* If you’re planning on gifting a card or two, sandwich the DRY finished product between a heavy book or two to flatten out the card.  Just leave it overnight and you’ll have lovely flat cards the next morning.

(Note: the top link to DarbySmart is a referral link, but just click here to get straight to the page for this kit!)

Aw I love those! I used to make watercolor cards for most holidays and whatever, but it was always like some heavy-handed sharpie overlaying a rush job. These are so elegant but fun!

Oh YAY! So glad you like them. It was so fun having someone else do the supply gathering- so crazy how something as simple as a kit can free up your brain! 🙂

Love Darby Smart! I love that you end up with tools that you can then use over and over again (Like a wood burner to write EAT into a cutting board;).

PS. You should definitely design your own Darby Smart box, miss CRAFTY! Ah! I can’t wait to see it.

I TOTALLY WANT TO DESIGN MY OWN BOX. We could dream some up and sell them on Etsy too!

PS- Which box did you get the wood burner in?! I am SO jealous of that board…
